How does confidentiality work in therapy?
In Florida, confidentiality in counseling is protected by state and federal laws. Counselors cannot share client information without written consent. Limits to confidentiality include: if the client is a danger to themselves or others, if there’s suspected abuse or neglect of a minor, elderly, or disabled person, or when a court order mandates disclosure. Florida law ensures privacy while balancing safety concerns, and clients are typically informed about these exceptions at the start of therapy.
